Thermal Baths Bad Gastein Sportgastein
Located on the northern rim of the Hohe Tauern national park, Bad Gastein lies in the Gastein valley in the Austrian state of Salzburg. It is in effect a spa town and has been since the middle ages, where royalty and well to do people used to relax in the thermal waters. Up until the 1950's the town was a Mecca for the rich and famous. However these days Bad Gastein ski holidays are becoming increasingly popular.
In a nutshell there are 4 different ski areas:
Stubnerkogel - This is the main ski area and caters for all levels and abilities. It rises to 2250 metres and offers a variety of runs through its large connections of cable cars and lifts with the most popular being the Hohe Scharte Nord. This run has a length of over 8 kms and is one of the longest in Europe. The Judau lift ski center situated within the Angertal valley is a great spot for beginners.
Sportgastein - This is the highest altitude skiing area. You can hit the slopes at around 900 metres and ski right up to 2686 metres. There are plenty of beginner slopes mixed in with some intermediate and expert runs.
Graukogel - This area is aimed more at the expert skier. It has some difficult and long downhill runs that lead through the forest. However be aware that there is no interconnection between other ski areas.
Dorfgastein - This spot offers a variety of runs for all levels. It boasts a highly modern cable railway and lift facility so you can reach your destination in comfort. It starts off at 850 meters and reaches its highest point at the "Fulseck" which at 2003 meters gives you some of the best panoramic views in the area.
About the village:
The nightlife here is varied and offers something for everyone. There are a wide selection of bars and restaurants for that "apres ski" experience and holiday makers can even enjoy an evening at the casino or ballroom dancing. If you really feel like letting your hair down then there are 3 discos. Accommodation in Bad Gastein can be good value, especially out of season, and includes apartments, chalets and other forms of lodgings. Bad Gastein hotels range from comfortable and cheap to plush and expensive.
